weekends are a bit slow at rehab. Kayla has had two good days with no stomach problems.
Sunday afternoon we went outside with Kayla in her wheelchair and went on the swing. It was a nice day, sunny and warm with a breeze. The wheelchair fits right on the swing with a seat on the opposite side for myself and the recreation therapist. Kayla seemed to enjoy the change of scenery.
It is a puzzle to me why she will not eat most of the time. If anyone has any ideas about how to get her to open her mouth for food send a note. Kayla really liked the peaches the other day but they will only let the speech therapist feed her those. I think I will order pureed peaches tomorrow for lunch. Maybe the taste will be the same and she will eat them.
applesauce, little pieces of french toast or pancakes. why dont they try foods she likes
ReplyDeletewe have tried all those things.
ReplyDeleteIf she still has the stomach tube - maybe she doesn't feel "hungry"?
ReplyDeleteIs it possible?
I'm SO glad to hear she continues to improve...

ReplyDeleteMy niece works in the field so I called and asked her if she had any suggestions. She doesn't work directly with children but she had some things I thought you might be able to inquire about for Kayla.
ReplyDeleteShe said to ask if they'll approve mechanical soft or advanced mechanical soft foods. These are foods that are slightly more textured than pureed and often mimic more of the texture they get from the real thing but also aren't large enough pieces to become choking hazards. She also said that when things are pureed, they are often mixed with other ingredients for them to be thicker or stand more. If it's a sweet she normally likes, this would change its flavor. My niece suggested asking them to mix the sweets with whipped cream which will bring back the sweetness of what she's eating.
Also, she said typically if people continuously refuse pureeds, they can often approve PB&J sandwiches for them as long as they are allowed bread. This is nutritious and also more appealing than the pureed but have a similar consistency.
I pray you find something that works for Kayla. She's been such a trooper through all of this!
